At about 8pm I entered the concert hall which was already filled with fans. It was a sold out show, just as on the Road to Graceland Tour in 1993 which also made a stop in Antwerp. After a short instrumental intro (available on the CD included in the tour programme), David and the other musicians walked on stage. During the opening number, The Scent of Magnolia, I was immediately impressed by Steve Janssen’s drumming (I never saw him perform live before). He’s the perfect drummer for Sylvian’s music: subtle, inventive and powerful. Unfortunately, these qualities didn’t apply to the other musicians. Especially Matt Cooper, a terrible show off who adds nothing of value to David’s music. Three words for Matt: too many notes! The best musicians are those who just play the three notes that kill. That doesn’t seem to be the credo for Matt Cooper. Half of the set was full of his useless solos. A shame! Tim Young had the very difficult task of playing guitar parts originally performed by semi-gods such as Robert Fripp, Marc Ribot and Bill Frisell. In some of the songs his playing blended perfectly with the atmosphere and spirit of David’s songs (Midnight Sun, Boy with the Gun, Ghosts, Nightporter). In Rooms of Sixteen Shimmers he was even more impressive. In other songs though his solos consisted of a thousand notes lacking any feeling or passion. Keith Lowe was ok. Now the positive part! DAVID SYLVIAN! He sung beautifully throughout the whole set, especially the quieter songs. David seemed also very relaxed, smiling a lot at his brother Steve and the audience. No surprises in the set. A mixture of old and new material, with some strange choices. No material from Gone to Earth or Brilliant Trees. Strangely enough, David selected some of his weaker songs such as Pollen Path, God Man and Cover Me With Flowers. The performances were very good, but I can think of at least 20 songs that I would have preferred hearing over these ones. Luckily there were excellent choices as Blackwater, Heartbeat and Fordbidden Colours (what a magnificent new arrangement!). I was also very glad to hear two Japan songs: Ghosts and Nightporter (1° encore and brilliant!). But the definite highlight of the show was The Secrets of the Beehive section: Boy With The Gun, Orpheus and Waterfront (yes, Matt Cooper kept quiet!). After the 2° encore the crowd kept asking for more and… David and the band returned on stage for a very pleasant surprise: Red Guitar! At last a song from Brilliant Trees! David said they didn’t properly rehearse it. Maybe that’s why the song sounded so fresh and exciting. Yet another highlight. My conclusion: a good concert, but not an excellent one, due to some strange choices in the set list and too much ego tripping by Matt Cooper and (in some songs) Tim Young. But it was a real pleasure hearing and seeing David perform again. I hope he will be back soon. Greetings, Bart Azare

we arrived in antwerp at 3 o`clock in the afternoon. (antwerp would win the first price in the contest of the ugliest town in europe, when there were not rotterdam and offenbach (the city i live in)) who choose this special unfriendly cities for david? (when you meet him, beat him!)
after searching for a long while, we found the concerthall. and we found the backstagedoor and we went through it. david was doing his soundcheck and we listend to his beautifull voice. he sang "the scent of magnolia". i asked someone named bart for a photopass and he told me, that the tourmanager didn`t arrive and i should come in two hours again.
at six we were standing in the hall again and waiting for bart. he came out of the backstage area and told us that taking pics would not be possible that night. i was sort of really disappointed and tried to ask him why, ect.
in the meantime, david was standing at the backstagearea door and staring at us (my sister, me and BART). he tried to understand, whats going on and he fixed us. but in the miment when he realized that we saw him standing there, he disappeared behind the corner...slowly...very slowly...
bart offered us, to ask the promoter for a photopass again. so, at the end, we were standing and waiting for two more hours infront of the hall. in that long time, i heared 4 phrases again and again, which seems typical for antwerpean people:
1. NO!
2. i can`t help you and i don`t know
3. that is all i can do for you
4. be patientced and wait
(here i want to give another bunch of barb wire to the promoter and unkind person named bart)
that made me very angry and sad and it was my basic feelings when i arrived almost late to the concert...
the concert started like all the others and the setlist was the same, i think. david was all in black with a yellow-golden tie. he seemed concentraded but in a good mood. he smiled a lot but tried to do his work ernest and serious. i don`t know, what some people expected and why they were disappointed about his show. this is how david is. he is a shy type and he is not running and dancing on the stage-how could he with that kind of music? and when there is a madMatt who is doing the show for him, more than you can stand it*lol...and don`t forget, he is not so young anymore (if you don`t believe, see his grandpa like black jackett and his moving from point a to b, sometimes it takes hours!!!)
okay, i was wondering, too, why he took madMatt as a keyboarder on tour (and i am sure, that david was asking himself too that night, when he shaked his head, smiling and looking irritated to matt, seeing him jumping-well said, like one of the muppets-on his keyboards and falling from his chair and dancing and jumping in songs like nightporter, like it is a disco version of a technosong. but i found him funny-although he killed the songs. but who let him kill them? the master himselve! so it is okay for me.
i enjoyed the concert very much. i enjoyed seeing keith lowe sleeping on his bass and the strange guy at the guitar timothy young (have you seen his homepage? *lol) and of course i enjoyed the beauty of steve playing his drums. everyone of them seem to love david and his music. and they tried to make the best of it. we should open up and let it in us-even when we love the original versions of the songs.
at the end of the first encore, i jumped from my seat (very good seat, in the center of the hall and the accustic was super good) and went to the first row, trying to shoot some pics. then when he began to sing bhajan i was sitting on the floor and he looked to me suprised and then he...smiled. for me everything bad in the world was forgotten that moment. i was endless happy and full of love in my very fast beating heart.
the third encore was red guitar, as you know and he was very relaxed-like the band, too. the crowd was happy... no, more than this. everybody was were smiling and there were tears of luck and everyone was dancing on the seats and singing and...i can`t explain...it was wonderfull! david was getting that emotions and power and he was smiling over his face and he looked really beautifull and very young at this moments.
my happiest moment was when i jumped to the stage at the end of red guitar and took my pictures infront of his feet and when he looked to me, smiling and shaking his head, like he was thinking "at least, you have got your pics, little girl. are you happy?" and he could saw, how happy i was. i am.
hope you are happy too, dear! see you again in 8 years?

I came in from the very North of Germany to see a musician I admire very much . The Queen Elizabeth Hall is next to the Central Station and both the hall and the station are being restored. I took a stroll and looked around before the hall was opened, but only saw one poster that announced David´s gig. Then about half past seven the place in front of the hall began to crowd with people,who-like me- wanted to watch him perform. I was seated on the balcony, where I could see excellently. Unfortunately the sound was not so good. I could not hear David´s voice loud and clear. Only when they were playing a very slow song like WATERFONT ,for instance , it was fine. When David entered the stage he looked somewhat shy and insecure. He was wearing black clothes and a golden tie. To be honest he remindend me of a circus-director. But I really do not care about the clothes someone wears if he sings beautiful songs. They started the set with SCENT OF MAGNOLIA equal to the concerts before .I was impressed by Matt Cooper, who played his keyboards, as if he would be payed for every single note that he played. Later on I thought well he is a good player, fast, improvisin g, but he would have contributed more, if he had played less in some of the balladlike songs. Nevertheless his work on FORBIDDEN COLOURS was great. Lowe and Young playing the strings in the „backyard" acted unobtrusive but were able to give variety to the set. I especially liked the songs that featured the doublebass. Little brother Steve did his drumming very well as always. I don´t know why David chose to use playback material for some drumpatterns and the background vocals for HEARTBEAT. On the other hand he spoke the INGRIDSPOKEN lines himself and arranged much of the material in a way that suited the band quite well. Did I say that David acted a little stiffly at the beginning; the longer they played the more he seemed to be comfortable on stage. He stomped his feet to the rhythm of the songs and when the crowd cheered for the third encore and they really came back you could see him smile from the bottom of his heart (I hope). After the concert my cousin and another friend, who came with me to see David perform entered a mexican bar and had several pints of beer and very nice taquitos. Sitting there we discussed our somewhat different opinions about the show we had seen. My friends absolutely liked Matt Cooper, od course they are both musicians, artists and love Jazz. Finally we came to the conclusion, that whatsoever it had been a good piece of musical entertainment. In addition like some others we invented a setlist that we would like to hear next time and a tourband as well in which Ryuichi Sakomoto and Kenny Wheeler would join David on stage . If he´d play that concert in Germany we would be satisfied I guess. P.S. I must add, that I was dissapointed about the tour programme. The music of the first song is nice but I´m not so much into this religious stuff from India. The second one is interesting as I have not listened to it so often yet. The so called interview is strange. He reads the questions himself and then answers them. I mean it has a kind of very private atmosphere, but it also sounds as if he did it in a hurry. Maybe I would have liked the booklet to be a little more substantial, for the price of 1000 BeF=50 DM. At the end of the report let me apologize in advance, for being too critical, so were my impressions. Risum-Lindholm (near the GermanDanish border) 12.10.01
